Is it safe for my puppy to go outside before all parvo shots?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 9 months and 10 days old | 9 lbs

My puppy is 10 weeks old and has her first 2 rounds of shots but I haven’t taken her in the backyard yet to potty train her because I had s puppy 6 months ago who died of parvo and I don’t want the new puppy to come in contact with the disease. I don’t think I can wait another month to take her outside to start potty training her so I’m wondering if it’s safe enough to take her outside now even though her shots aren’t complete

I wouldn't take Koda into the backyard just yet because parvo can live in then environment for months. If her shots aren't complete, she still runs the risk of catching it from the environment. I'd take her in the front yard if your previous puppy hadn't gone there, but wait until she is fully vaccinated before taking her into the backyard. Best of luck!

After one week from the full vaccination is done you can take your puppy outside. It is risky to take him outside now, especially were an infected dog used to be. Parvovirus can be persistent in the environment, so I would avoid any risk of potential exposure.
