My cat has crystals, is hungry, and spits out her medicine. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Turkish Van | Female | spayed | 6 years and 2 months old | 7.05 lbs

My cat was diagnosed with struvite crystals in her bladder. According to her diet she is to have 65g of her prescribed food in a day. (Since her weight is around 4kgs). She is used to eating so much more, and keeps getting hungry. What can I give her? Is milk okay? My second question is that she keeps foaming and spitting out the pain relief medication that has been prescribed. Is it normal for cats to do that?

If your cat is losing weight on 65 grams /day then you need to feed her a bit more. She also needs to drink a lot of water, if possible, so put the water bowl about 2m plus away from the food as cats do not like to drink water near their food. Do not feed milk to your cat. Cats often are lactose -intolerant and get diarrhea from milk. The pan medication probably tastes terrible which is why she foams and spits it out. You need to put the tablet behind her tongue, close her mouth and gently rub her throat. Here is a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWlpsTh6ddk
