Why is my dog suddenly anxious and scooting on thyroid meds?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 5 years and 4 months old | 90 lbs

My dog has been diagnosed with thyroid issue and they put her on meds for it. She had been responding well to the medication at first but all of a sudden she is super high anxiety and she acts like she wants to go to bathroom but she stops to sit down every few steps and whines like she's trying to do the boot scoot but doesn't know how. She seems to calm down when I'm right there consoling her but if I get up to do anything she really freaks out.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Juke. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian. She may be experiencing pain in her anal glands, difficulty defecating or a urinary tract infection. Hypothyroidism and the corresponding medications do not typically cause anxiety. If her dosage is too high, it can create hyperactivity though. I hope this information helps!
