How to get my aggressive cat and new puppy to get along outside?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 3 years and 4 months old

We got a new outdoor puppy and my other outdoor cat hates the puppy and is very aggressive towards it. The cat is now inside but I would like to have her outside. The second she sees the dog she will run and attack it. We put them on either side of a glass door and the cat will jump at the window and snarle at the dog. Is it possible to get the dog and cat to be able to both be outside and to get along? If so how do I teach them to get along?

This might be difficult as it sounds like Pooki is displaying extremely aggressive behavior. You could try very, very slowly acclimating them to each other by offering food to each one on either side of the glass door for very short periods of time (stop the interaction if either one starts to seem upset or show signs of aggression) and eventually keeping them separated by something like a baby gate. Another option might be to keep Pooki in a separate area of the yard - you would need to be sure there was no access and that Pooki would not be able to harm the puppy.
