What's the safe rider weight for a miniature horse or mini pony?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

How much does a mini horse have to weigh for someone 120lbs to ride them? I want to rehabilitate and rescue miniature horses and let little kids hop on one when they are trained where they can experience that feeling whe. you get on your first horse :) and maybe even teach lessons eventually. So i do need to start the horse under saddle eventually. How would i do that? Thank you!

Rider weight should not be more than 20% of body weight of the horse. You need to find a proficient light weight teen or adult to train them, I suppose. If it was a European shetland pony 120lbs would be ok for training, but American Shetlands and minihorses are very lightly built so I think 120lbs is a bit heavy.
