Why is my dog scooting her butt on the carpet? What causes it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 8 years and 8 months old

My dog keeps scooting/rubbing her butt on the carpet, and I'm a bit worried about her health. Do you know anything that could be causing this? (That's my dog in the photo. The one who keeps rubbing her butt on the carpet)

Bayla is so cute! She could have intestinal worms or her anal sacs could be impacted causing her scooting. I would take her into the vet in the morning, and bring along a sample of her feces. The vet can examine her feces under a microscope to see if she has intestinal worms, and can express her anal sacs as needed. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

Scooting is usually a sign that her bum hurts or itches. The two main causes would be intestinal worms or inflamed, infected or impacted anal sacs. I suggest you take your dog to your veterinarian for an exam of the anal glands and sacs and treatment if indicated by the exam results.
