My Shih Tzu has bad breath. Could his chicken breast diet be why?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | 9 years and 7 months old | 17 lbs

My Shitzue has terrible breath..I feed him chicken breast on his food...My Maltipoo passed away recently and he had to eat chicken and rice..So Tanner got used to the chicken and I boil chicken breast for him..I think that is the reason for his bad breath... What can I do??

Actually bad breath in dogs is likely related to dental problems. Tanner is an older dog, and if he's had no dental care in his life, then he could be suffering from severe gingivitis and dental disease. Give his vet a call in the morning to make him an appointment for a dental cleaning, scaling, and polishing. Best of luck, I hope this helps!
