My dog brought a dead rat or mouse home. Should I be worried?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | 1 year and 2 months old | 85 lbs

My dog brought a rat or maybe it was a mouse into our house in her mouth this morning. It was dead when she brought it in. We are not sure if she just brought it into us or if she killed it first. We can’t even tell whether or not it was a mouse or rat. Is there anything that we need to do or worry about?

If she did not eat the rodent, then I do not think you have to worry about. Check her small bite marks, as the rodent could have bitten her, and if you finde bite marks, take her to your veterinarian for an exam and prescription antibiotics. If she ate the rodent then I would be worried that it may have been a poisoned one and suggest you closely monitor your dog's mucous membranes for paleness, or have your vet do a coagulation panel to determine whether Lux's clotting ability is compromised. If you notice your dog getting ill, you should also take him in to the vet. In general, it is not a huge problem if your dog kills a rat.
