Why won't my picky dog eat his food unless I am right there with him?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 2 years and 2 months old | 16.3 lbs

my dog is a very very picky eater. he doesnt get alot of treats or tablescraps but has been this way since we got him 2 years ago. If we try to feed him dog food he will not eat for days until we give him his usual meal of chicken, veggies and kibble. He has gone up to almost 2 weeks before we give in. This habit has recently developed to me needing to be with him when he eats otherwise he will refuse.

It sounds like Tommy may have some anxiety surrounding being fed. I'd highly recommend talking to a trainer or behaviorist in person that can observe the behavior so that they can make a tailored plan to help Tommy feel more comfortable when eating on his own. This may include you gradually stepping farther and farther away as he eats, or adding in some calming pheromones or other techniques to help him relax in the room he eats in. As for the picky eating, adding in a small treat or piece of veggie to his meals should be just fine if he won't eat otherwise. http://www.dacvb.org/about/member-directory/ This site may help you find a veterinary behaviorist in your area if you are interested in talking to one.
