What's wrong? My hamster is weak, not eating, and has a wet tail.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Hamster | Male

Noticed my hamster wasn’t behaving normally. Very weak and lethargic. Doesn’t eat nor drink. Separated him from the other hamsters. His belly area towards the back seems red and wet. I’ve provided some pictures, would really appreciate an expert to guide me on this. All the nearby vets are closed for today :(

The wet bottom could be due to diarrhoea. These signs could be compatible with an inflammation infection of the gastrointestinal system and surrounding organs (like pancreas and liver), which is a very concerning sign in hamsters. A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is immediately essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics are likely to be needed. Unfortunately there is nothing you can do back home, as medications are required as soon as possible.
