This sounds like he is grouchy and restless due to pain. He is an older dog and probably has some arthritis causing discomfort. Also senior dogs can get senile just like elderly people. I recommend a veterinary exam. They can feel his joints to determine where he is painful and can prescribe medication for arthritis. If they think he has cognitive dysfunction there are supplements and medications to improve his brain function. Hills and purine both have dog foods for brain health also. Donut likely is suffering from arthritis at his age. This is a very painful condition which can be made more bearable with anti-inflammatory medication prescribed by your veterinarian. He may also suffer from canine cognitive disorder, which often makes a dog wake up in the night and be afraid as he does not remember where he is...a type of senility. Leaving the light on or a a radio playing (unless he is deaf) sometimes helps. If he keeps waking up at night and/or appears in pain, have him examined by your vet .
