My dog struggles to stand and limps. Could it be hip dysplasia?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 4 months old | 79.36 lbs

Hello Team, My Labrador is unable to stand up suddenly after lying down for a long time or after sleep. She needs physical support at times too. Otherwise she is very active and loves to walk and play but after exercise she limps for a few hours that day. We have already reduced her portion size and now she also is on a obesity control dog food diet once a day. Also we ensure to give 2tablets of VENDISC medicine daily. Please advise what could be the reason and what precautions can be taken.

This is probably due to hip dysplasia, a chronic knee problem or arthritis in her joints. She also could have a bulging intervertebral disc causing the symptoms. I recommend using a Help em Up harness on her so you can easily assist her to stand up. In addition speak with your veterinarian about giving her pain medication. I also like to give an omega 3 supplement to reduce inflammation. If she’s overweight reducing her weight will reduce the strain, stiffness and pain in her joints.
