Why is my guinea pig's eye swollen and red? What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Guinea Pig | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 11 months old

Hi there, my guinea pig's left eye has recently become swollen and a little red (his other eye is completely fine). His behavior is normal, and he is eating and drinking like usual, but I am worried that this might be something serious. I'd appreciate any help and advice that you could give me. Thanks very much! Nick

Thanks for reaching out about Boomer and including pictures. It does appear as if the tissue under the eye is swollen, the eye itself red and possible air bubbles inside the eye. Possible causes are trauma to the eye (scratch, perforation) or an infection. Glad to hear he is still eating and acting well, but it is recommended to have a veterinarian examine 'Boomer and the eye to evaluate the condition and generate a treatment plan. Try and keep it clean with a warm wet washcloth for now.
