Why is my rescue dog licking his split prepuce so much, is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | 1 year and 6 months old | 12 lbs

My dog's prepuce has a split near the tip. It isn't red or swollen or bleeding, but he does lick it an enormous amount. He's a rescue, so it could be an old injury. Just not sure what to make of ou.

Hello. If the split looks healed, & this seems to be what you are describing, then I would not be concerned at all, especially if the prepuce covers the entire penis. Male dogs, especially unneutered ones, will lick quite a bit. That is normal. There is a possibility of an infection within the sheath, but your veterinarian will need to see if this is the case & if necessary, prescribe an antibiotic to treat.
