My dog's shoulder hurts. What can I do to help her without a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 3 months old | 50 lbs

I live in rural Alaska so nearest vet is 2 plane rides away. My 15 month Husky/Lab mix is having bad shoulder pain. She will run fine but has pain when laying on her shoulder or jumping, and sometimes if I just lightly hold her collar she yelps. She barely has played in 5 days except running outside. Nothing happened except maybe over use after playing hard for hours Saturday. She yelps in pain with certain movements. Acts fine otherwise. How can I ease pain and should i restrict activity

Since you have no easy access to a vet you can start by seriously restricting activity of your dog. That means strictly leash walking for eliminations, otherwise crate rest. Check for swelling and injuries. bite wounds and other trauma If you find wounds she will likely need antibiotics. If you do find a swelling you can try to ice the area on and off and hope the swelling will go down. Icing will also take the pain.If this does not improve within a week you need to contact the vet nearest you for advice. It may be possible for that vet to do a computer assisted consult (you will need a camera and a mic for that) and get medications to you.
