Why does my dog have small scabs that turn into open wounds?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Goldendoodle | Female | spayed | 1 year and 1 month old | 30 lbs

Bodhi has developed a number of bumps on her fur. They do not appear to be very painful or annoying, but i notice them when I pet her. If I look at them up close, they are small scabs that become a small open wound if I scrape them away. This has been ongoing for a few days. Any idea what could be causing this? Does this require a vet visit? I’m attaching two photos. In the first, my finger is pointing to the scabs. In the second, I’m showing the small wounds when the scabs are scraped away.

She has a mild skin infection. I recommend bathing her weekly in a medicated shampoo. Brushing the fur to remove the debris will help stimulate the skin and you can apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment onto the small areas that are red once the scab is removed. If this continues even with the medicated baths then a veterinary exam and treatment is recommended. She may need oral antibiotics to clear this skin infection.
