My 6-month budgie laid eggs with her father. Are chicks at risk?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Female | unspayed

My 6 month old budgies is laying eggs, she has a clutch. She seems happy and fine to sit on them. The only problem is that the father or her future chicks is her father. Will the inbreeding cause any problems with her future babies? I am also concerned that her father is also with her mother who has eggs, will this cause disagreements, fights and stress among the aviary?

Thanks for your question about your budgies. Your instincts are correct - inbreeding in any species is not advisable as it can lead to defects and potential for a decreased immune system (which will make the birds be more susceptible to getting sick). There is a chance that you may not see any issues, but it is definitely something to be aware of. As far as the stress with multiple nests - I would recommend ensuring that there is plenty of space and food available as this can help decrease any potential conflicts. I hope that helps, and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
