My horse has a painful face lump. What's causing it and what to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Farm Animal | Horse | Female | spayed | 19 years and 5 months old

This morning when I went out to feed my horses. I noticed my sorrel had a huge lump on the side of her face. She jerks away everytime I put pressure on it, or even lightly touch it. The other side of her face doesn't have it. Any ideas?

Check for bite marks (snake bite). If you cannot find any, there is likely some problem with a tooth or tooth root, or salivary gland. Your horse could also have been kicked there or, when eating, have bitten in some foreign material in the hay that could have caused a mouth injury. If the swelling does not go down within 24 hours I would call out a veterinarian for an exam of your horse's mouth and face.
