My dog hit my rat. Its eye is out and bleeding. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rat | Female | 1 month and 9 days old

My dog hit the rat with its paw. The rat was still for 3 seconds until I helped him up, he seems normal but the eye looks like it popped out. There was blood in his nose and blood in his eye he cleaned it out and seems less adventurous. Is this something serious could it be a tumour? I really want him to keep the eye but if it’s serious I could let the vet operate on him as long as he survives. What should I do?

Your rat has a serious head trauma (blood in nose and eye) and a proptosed eye. There is nothing you can do for your rat at home. You will need to take him to your veterinarian for an exam. Your rat will need pain medicine and medication depending on the injuries. Please take Tip to your veterinarian now.
