My dog has recurring fevers, lethargy, and won't eat. What's next?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | English Springer Spaniel | Female | unspayed | 4 years and 5 months old | 45 lbs

Brooke has gotten two bad fevers in the last two months. She would become lethargic, weak, and stop eating. First time her temp was 106 and took 2 weeks to recover, second was less because we caught it sooner. Both times we took her to the vet and both times got antibiotics. Both times she got better, only to fall sick again when they were gone. We have been to 4 vets. Bloodwork is fine, xray and ultrasound showed no abnormalities. Any ideas?

My next step would be to send off blood for a test for plague (Yersinia pestis) and Tularemia, especially if your dog has access to areas where there are rodents, squirrels and rabbits. These would not be included in regular blood work. You may also want tod discuss a disease called malignant hyperthermia with your veterinarian. Other common causes of "fever of unknown origin" would be tumors, however your vet apparently ruled those out with blood tests, ultrasound, and xray and possibly blood parasites such as Ehrlichia spp, Babesia spp and similar. A heartworm test may also be advisable.
