My dog ate a bone, had diarrhea, normal, no poop. Should I worry?

Friday Kyro swallowed big bone off street. Sat & Sun lot of Diarrhea & some vomiting. Sun an Emergency Vet took X ray. Emergency Vet saw piece in stomach. Prescribed Metronidazole & Famotidine, suggested 1/4 cup of rice & 1/4 cup of chicken as feedings which I did a few. Today my Vet said NO rice but feed chicken, pumpkin and peas. My Vet did NOT see bone in stomach. Sunday only slight water as bowl movements. Today no bowl movements. Kyro eating & acting normal. No extended stomach or delicate

Bones can dissolve in the stomach with enough time. It sounds like Kyro had a bout of pancreatitis that caused the vomiting and diarrhea. If Kyro is now acting normal, I would continue to feed the bland diet and see what happens. It may take a day or two for there to be enough food ingested to create solid poop. If he stops eating, starts vomiting again, or seems lethargic, he should be re-examined by a vet.

Since it is not known what Kylo ate, it’s impossible to say for sure that it is the cause of the diarrhea or if it is coincidental. Certainly pets can get G.I. upset from eating things they shouldn’t. If he bland diet doesn’t improve things after 24 hours, pets should receive further care. Kylo should continue the bland diet and I also recommend to call his veterinarian. The loud stomach noises indicate his stomach is upset. Some of these pets needs antibiotics (spoiled food can lead to infection). Probiotics are generally beneficial. I hope he starts feeling better quickly and please feel free to post any additional questions.

My 2.5 year old chiuaua / jack Russell mix has thrown up 4 times today with mucus/bloody diarrhea. Could him eating cooked steak and pork bones be causing this?
Yes, either or both may cause gastrointestinal upset or, more seriously, pancreatitis. If he is behaving normally otherwise, you can try withholding all food for 24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet in small, frequent amounts. Begin with 1 tablespoon every hour and gradually increase the amount if there is no vomiting. Feed bland until the stool is normal then transition slowly to his regular diet. If symptoms do not resolve or if Emmitt develops lethargy, loss of appetite or abdominal pain, have him examined right away by your veterinarian. A simple blood test can be done in the clinic to screen for pancreatitis.

Keep an eye on Dobby. As long as he's keeping his food down, keep feeding him and offering him plenty of water. Give him half a slice of whole wheat bread with each meal. This may form a ball of ingesta around the bones, and cushion them as they pass through the GI tract. If he continues vomiting, there is blood in his vomit or feces, he becomes lethargic, and/or he stops eating, he needs to see a vet immediately. In that case, find an ER vet or a vet on call. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website. Best of luck.

Dog was chewing on a cooked beef bone. Looks like he chewed some up and it crumbled. He had hard dry poop this morning now diarrhea.
It sounds like like bone has upset Bruno's stomach. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, he starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away.

I’m sorry to hear about Paislee! The most likely scenario is gastroenteritis (inflammation of the stomach and intestines) which is often brought on by eating something new/different. However it can also be caused by toxin, infection, organ disease, cancer, or other. If she’s just vomited the few times, pick up the food and water and monitor. Reintroduce water 4 hours after the vomiting episode and a small meal 12 hours after vomiting episode. Try a bland diet (half plain boiled/canned chicken half plain cooked white rice) for a few days and I expect the diarrhea to improve after 1-3 days. (Then transition back to her regular diet slowly over 3-5 days.) If at ANY time she is lethargic, vomiting, not wanting to eat, or you have other concerns, you need to go to the vet clinic right away to make sure it’s nothing more serious. If Paislee’s has vomited several more times, it’s time to head to the ER clinic. The veterinarian will do a good physical exam and may recommend x-rays and/o

hello my dog has swallowed rib bones by accident last night while I was sleeping and she now has the runs is this a good thing or bad ?
Poor Devious! Many dogs will have an upset stomach after eating something like this. The biggest concern is that the rib bones can have sharp edges and may cause an intestinal perforation, or they could become stuck and cause a blockage in her intestines. Signs of these problems would include repeated episodes of vomiting, acting lethargic, and not wanting to eat - if she develops any of these symptoms, she needs to see a vet immediately as she may need emergency surgery to remove the bones. If she is acting normal right now apart from some runny stool, you can try feeding her a bland diet of plain boiled chicken and rice for the next 2-3 days to help settle her stomach and get things back to normal. If this doesn't help, or if she develops any other symptoms such as the ones I listed above, you will need to take her to the vet right away for an exam and treatment.

Your dog still may vomit the bone or some of the bone fragments and she will probably have an upset stomach for a day or so. She will probably also develop diarrhea or soft stools because of ingesting the bones. Keep a close eye on her and if the vomiting lasts more than 24 hours or she starts having bloody stools, you will need to take her to the veterinarian. Diarrhea and throwing up can have many causes. It is basically a problem with the stomach and intestines caused by a food over sensitivity, eating something that does not agree with the dog, intestinal parasites, bacterial infection, viral infection, the weather, food change, stress, etc. I would fast Sasha for 24 hours and then put her on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to her regular food slowly over a few days. If this does not clear up the diarrhea or if the vomiting increases, or if she gets lethargic, she needs to see a veterinarian for an exam as there may be something more serious such as an infection going on.

Dog ate a ham bone one day ago. She has eaten a bit, drank a bunch of water and has pooped 3 times since. Twice it was somewhat solid tan poop and once was tan diarrhea. Should I be worried and go to a vet or will she be ok ?
If there is no blood in the diarrhea and as long as Fate is eating and drinking normally with no vomiting it is probably okay to monitor her. Ham bones can cause bloody diarrhea, constipation or intestinal obstruction so if you see her straining to defecate or you see the signs above you should see a vet right away. If she doesn’t have any dietary restrictions you could try feeding a bland diet of 25% boiled chicken and 75% plain white rice for the next couple of days to help with the diarrhea.

Poor Dakota. It sounds like he feels really bad. Bones can splinter in the GI tract and cause quite a bit of damage and pain, so I would recommend having your veterinarian examine him to make sure that he doesn't have any more bone fragments in his GI tract that are causing a problem. You vet can also prescribe an antibiotic that will help resolve the diarrhea and prevent any problems that the bone may have caused in the GI tract to help him feel better ASAP. Good luck! My 18 month old Springer spaniel loves his bones yesterday he vomited and there was a chunk of bone in it today he has had diarrhea and vomited once more and there was a little bit of blood in it
Poor guy. It sounds like Riley is having classic signs of hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, which is likely caused by the bones or something else he ingested. It is best to get him to your vet as soon as you can. However, if there is no one available today and he otherwise seems to be pretty energetic and isn't continuing to vomit, then you can do some things for now to help calm his stomach down. 1) Bland diet- boiled plain chicken or lean ground turkey and white rice 2) Fiber- 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) added to his food daily to help firm things up 3) Probiotic- over the counter Culturelle or Fortiflora (available online) added to his food daily to help resotre his normal GI flora. When pets have blood in the stool this indicates their intestines are inflammed and the GI flora is imbalanced. If Riley seems to ill however, taking him to an ER vet today is highly recommended.
