Why does my 7-year-old lab have a squishy, painless lump on his side?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | unneutered | 7 years and 8 months old | 90 lbs

My 7 year old lab has a big lump on his side(near his shoulder). It's not hard, it's kind of squishy. It's not painful for him, and he's not sick. Can you tell me what you think it might be? .

This could be a hematoma, a cyst or a tumor. The most common tumors in this location would be a fatty tumor, which usually is benign. However the only way to determine what kind of mass this is is to take Rocky to your veterinarian for an exam. Your vet may want to do a fine needle aspirate (he takes some material from the bump with a needle and then looks at it under the microscope) to determine whether the mass is concerning.
