My cat fell from a tree. Why are new wounds appearing days later?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered

A few days ago my cat fell out of a tree and after we checked him out we found one open wound on his hip. Leg seems to be doing fine but yesterday when cleaning the wound I found two more open spots and when checking him again this morning there were about three or four more open wounds. What’s happening?

There was bruising and infection under the skin where you couldn’t see it. Now the overlying skin that has been damaged has opened up letting the infection drain out. Some of this skin will come off like a scab as the tissue heals underneath. This looks serious so I would clean these areas twice daily with hydrogen peroxide. If he stops eating or becomes lethargic please bring him in for an exam and treatment. He may need oral antibiotics if a fever develops.
