Dog licking swollen paw with puncture wound. What to ask the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 9 years and 2 months old | 45 lbs

my basset has been licking her front right paw a lot today and i just looked and noticed the ankle is swollen and there is a small, round puncture wound. it looks like some kind of bug bite but i’m not sure. as far as i know she did not have this last night. any idea what it could be? she’s going to the vet tmrw for Bordetella shot and i want to know what questions i should ask the vet about this and get a 2nd opinion. thank you!

Autumn's leg definitely seems swollen! It's possible that she has a wound that is infected causing swelling and inflammation of the surrounding skin. A joint infection or even a tumor would also be a possibility. I think it's a great idea to have a vet examine Autumn in person - they might recommend taking an x-ray or performing a needle aspirate of the swollen area to help determine what is going on. Be aware that if Autumn has a fever or other evidence of a serious infection they might recommend delaying her Bordetella vaccine.
