My male budgies fight. Can separating them cause loneliness or death?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Male | 10 lbs

I just separated my two male budgies. They seem to be doing well. They have a weird relationship when they fight one second and are affectionate with each other the next. I decided to separate them before one of them gets hurt, but I read online that they can die from loneliness. I put their cages together, but is that enough? Do they need to be together even though they fight?

Budgies are social animals. Just because they fight sometimes doesn't mean they hate each other. They often interact to enforce a social hierarchy. If you need to keep them separate, try letting them out at the same time to have periods of time together, although this could stimulating the re-establishment of their social standings. Good luck.
