My old dog has prostate cancer. What are treatment options and risks?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 11 years and 2 months old | 90 lbs

Hello, I have a 11 year old, male,, neutered German Shepherd Mix diagnosed with prostate cancer . A 2 cm nodule was found by accident in an abdominal ultrasound, no symptoms. Fine Needle aspirate confirmed carcinoma. A CT showed no metastasis. Was considering Stereotactic Radiotherapy which is 3 sessions. Afraid of side effects to colon, such as colitis and strictures that may be permanent.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Jack! I am very sorry about his diagnosis. Prostate cancer can be very difficult on dogs. I thin it is a tough decision. I would ask the specialist, since he is not symptomatic for the prostate cancer and it was found incidentally, what is the chance he would do well with just Piroxicam. I would have to say trust what they say. I personally am not sure I would put my old through surgery or radiation for this type of cancer. I wish you and Jack the best
