My anemic kitten is lethargic. How long until he feels better?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 28 days old | 2 lbs

My 3month-old kitten is severely anemic due to flea infestation. His RBC was only 7 on Thursday. The vet applied Bravecto and sent me home. He seems a tiny bit better but is still very lethargic and will not eat unless forced. Can you tell me how long it will take for him to feel better?? Please, I'm worried to death!!

An RBC of 7 is seriously low. It will take quite some time (around three weeks to get a normal RBC count) for your kitty to make new blood, so it is important that it eats and drinks. I would actually feed it canned food only, and even add some minced beef (hamburger) to it to make sure it has enough iron and moisture to make new blood. He should get a little bit better every day. Such severe anemia weakened your kitty and that is why he is so lethargic.
