Why is my rescue swallow fledgling having diarrhea from cat food?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi we have two rescue swallow fledglings that we have been caring for. They suddenly have diarrhoea what can we do for them please. Have been mostly on a diet of high quality wet cat food as well as fresh moths and such as we can get hold of them have also been giving them water with a syringe.

Thanks for reaching out. The concern would be that cat food might be too high in animal protein content for them. Cat food is high in animal protein, where the swallows are more insectivorous. The sparrow mothers feed chewed up bugs. Check with a local pet store to see if they have something more appropriate. The diarrhea is likely a sign of intestinal upset, but no sure if from a bacterial overgrowth or mal-digestion. Try diluting the cat food for now, but seek some veterinary advice.
