Dog leaked stinky liquid in bed while asleep. Is it anal glands?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | neutered | 1 year and 6 months old | 70 lbs

My dog pooped tiny bit while he was asleep, he woke up and he was surprised that he pooped in the bed. (it was not exactly poop but like poop water smelled like stinky shrimp) He had normal poop during the day. Is it possible that he might have farted and some smelly liquid came out.?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Puku. He may have expressed his anal glands in his sleep. The anal glands are small glands located under the skin on either side of the anus. They express each time the dog defecates to mark its scent. They can occasionally leak at other times releasing a foul smelling brown to gray liquid. If this occurs again, he should see his veterinarian to have them expressed for him. I hope this information helps!
