How to help my aggressive rescue dog overcome fear-based reactions?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Havanese | Male | neutered | 18 lbs

My rescue dog has PTSD and will sometimes nip at a guest in my home if they move suddenly. He hates bicycles he used to be very aggressive with men, especially if they are wearing a ball cap. We believe he was mistreated by Hispanic males. We have been to several obedience classes and our fourth series of Rally classes. Is there any hope for him to overcome his sometimes aggressive nature.

This is difficult to improve. You can try asking him to sit or another obedience command and praise and treat if he focuses on you when a bicycle or person he is aggressive with is around. This will take lots of time and patience. In the meantime I would crate him when people come into the house, then have them sit and take him into the room on the leash. Have them ignore him, just continue to talking with you or others. Pet and reward him if he’s relaxed. If he can’t relax or won’t sit or obey, do not punish him but take him back and put him in the crate again in a quiet room. Eventually he’ll learn that if he’s obedient and relaxed he can stay in the room with you and guests. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Rags.
