Why are my dog's dewclaw pads crusty? Could it be hyperkeratosis?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shihpoo | Male | neutered | 15 years and 4 months old | 11 lbs

By shihpoo has front dewclaws and the pads they are attached to are clack, crusty and crumbly. his nails are also black so I am afraid to trim them too short but not sure what to do about the crusty pads. Any advice?

You may just be seeing hyperkeratosis of the pads which is very common in a lot of dogs. It's essentially just an overgrowth of the skin in this area and commonly occurs to the nasal planum and paw pads, especially as dogs age. As long as your pet is comfortable and walking well for most dogs it is just cosmetic. I hope this helps and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
