My dog has a non-painful skin sore with hair loss. What could it be?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 4 years and 8 months old

Hello, my dog developed a sore/wound on his skin. He lost his hair there. Doesn’t seem to be painful when I touch It. I showered him Thursday and I didn’t notice It. The next day is when I saw the sore. I’m not sure what It is. Please help

I am sorry to hear about Mickey! A photo of the area would help us better answer your question. Some sores can develop from things like a small wound or insect bite but others can be from bacterial or fungal infection or more. You can clean the area with mild soap or Hibiclens (available at most pet stores) and apply a topical antibiotic ointment. If your dog is licking at the area he may need an e-collar (the lampshade shaped collars) to stop this until it heals. If the area is worsening or not starting to improve within a few days a visit to the vet is recommended.
