My dog got tea tree oil on an open wound. Is it toxic? What now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 5 years and 3 months old | 15 lbs

I need advise if my dog is going to be ok, I put some un diluted tee tree oil on my dogs itching sores because I read it helped but then read it is toxic after applying it so I washed it off but she scratched her sore open with it on and it may have gotten in it I am kinda scared as if she will get sick but I don't want to take her to a vet if she is fine, is there anything I can do at home to keep her from getting sick????

HI, thanks for using PetCoach! Poor Honey! Tea tree oil is toxic at high concentrations. If you washed it off and she hasn't licked it and is acting fine she will be ok. Watch her for lethargy or neurologic signs. if she isn't showing symptoms there is nothing to do preventatively. I would try a triple antibiotic on the wound and an antihistamine. If it doesn't heal you should have her seen by a Vet. Good luck! https://www.petcoach.co/canigive/dog/zyrtec/
