My senior dog is declining rapidly. When is it time to say goodbye?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Staffordshire Terrier | Female | spayed | 14 years and 4 months old | 60 lbs

My 14 year old pit bull has had steadily declining health for the past 2 weeks . She started with decreased appetite , then no appetite for anything other than cooked chicken hand fed to her. Now she is SOB, with steadily purplish tongue . Last vet visit 2 months ago when she had ideopathic vestibular disease she was diagnosed with a mild heart murmur . 2 months before at vet, no murmur . In medical field , got her some lasix. Is it just her time?

It's possible if Bella is declining rapidly. Since she is declining, I would bring her back into your vet to see if anything else can be done, but it sounds like you are already very on top of her care. Your vet can talk with you to see if there is anything else quality of life wise that can be done, or if it's time to say goodbye. Regardless of your decision, it sounds as if Bella is very loved and well cared for and has had a wonderful life with you.
