My dog isn't eating after being sick. What to do if vets are closed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Bulldog | Male | neutered | 7 years and 9 months old | 60 lbs

My dog is a 7yr old American bulldog and he is not eating. I tried to mix him some formula and wet dog food and he wouldn’t eat it. I tried to give him so dog food and he wouldn’t eat. I also tried to give him a slice of cheese and ham and he wouldn’t eat. He is really skinny and I am wondering what I can do. It is a weekend and no vets are open around me. I just want to know what I can do for him and what could be wrong. He was at the vet throwing up and pooping blood about 1 1/2 week ago.

I would suspect that his lack of appetite is related to his recent episode of vomiting and blood in stool. There can be many different causes of this, so it's important to have him re-evaluated by a vet and treated again. He can go a couple of days without eating, but I would be more concerned if he was not drinking, had bloody stool, or vomit, or was acting very depressed/lethargic. If you are noticing these problems too, then it's best to have him seen by a vet within 24 hours. I see that you are in a rural area, but there may be a vet available in Wichita. If not, then there would definitely be vets available in Manhattan where the KSU vet school is. They have a great vet hospital there with many specialists on staff, so you may consider going there if you are not getting a good diagnosis, or resolution of his current problems. Unfortunately, I don't think there are any more ways to get him to eat at this time. It looks like you've offered some tasty food, so if he's not eating that, then he probably won't eat anything. Also, you can get more stomach/intestinal upset if you feed too rich of food at this time, so it's really best to have him seen by a vet before trying other food options. I hope that helps and Harly feels better soon.
