Can I give my old dog human penicillin for an infection on a growth?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 15 years and 11 months old | 28 lbs

Hi there. I have phenoxymethyl penicillin, 250mg film coated tablets and I'm wondering if they may work to treat my mid-size dog's infection? It is sited on a large growth; this growth causes him no pain. At the last visit Bear's vet said if he got an infection we would have to put him down as he is 16. However he is exceptionally healthy in every way so can I give him a does and if so, what amount? Thanks so much!

Unfortunately, by law it is illegal for the experts at Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to give the dose information for any drug without seeing the animal in person first. That's because doing so requires a veterinary client patient relationship which cannot be achieved via an internet forum. In addition, the experts cannot say for certain if a specific drug is safe for Bear. I do not recommend giving him any antibiotics for this infection unless specifically prescribed by a vet. You will need to take him into the vet to discuss using antibiotics. The vet cannot put him down without your permission, so that should not be a worry. Best of luck.
