Why did my dog wake up breathing fast and making choking sounds?

My dog was sound asleep on a mattress I have under my bed (she rarely sleeps here, generally downstairs on her own flat beds) but suddenly she woke up breathing very fast and making this very deep and throaty sound when she breathed, nearly sounded like she was choking on something. I found it strange because she very, very rarely does this. Is it something I should look into further and get checked or is it something normal that I shouldn’t worry too much about?
