Can pumpkin cause puppy diarrhea? What should I do to help my pup?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shiba Inu | Female | unspayed | 3 months and 9 days old | 6 lbs

Gave our puppy about 1.5-2 tablespoons of pumpkin with her dinner about 2 days ago. She’s had diarrhea ever since. Semi-formed stool this AM, so it appears to be getting better. Did the pumpkin cause this? Should I do anything besides let it run its course?

It could be the pumpkin causing Kiko's diarrhea if it's a food she has never had before. It could also be she has intestinal worms, has a GI illness, or may have eaten something rotten. If it appears to be getting better, I can give you a home remedy to try. Feed her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Best of luck.
