Dog struggling to breathe, no vet help. Is it time to say goodbye?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Female | spayed | 10 years and 5 months old | 30 lbs

5 weeks ago Coco had a nose bleed. After many vet visits and treatments she has only gotten worse. She is sneezing constantly, with discharge. There used to be blood mixed in but the Yunnan Baiyao helped for awhile until today. Even with the YB there has been some blood, she is reverse sneezing, panting, and sometimes her breathing sounds watery. Should I have her put to sleep? They tested her liver and anesthesia is a big risk so scoping might not be an option. I don’t know what to do anymore.

This is such a difficult decision to make, and unfortunately without knowing all of the details of Coco’s case and being able to examine her in person it’s hard to know if it might be time to consider euthanasia. If your vet feels it’s likely that the symptoms are not related to something potentially treatable like an infection, nasal foreign body or tooth root abscess then it may not be worth the anesthetic risk to try to get more information by scoping. It sounds like she is having trouble breathing, and if her ability to rest comfortably and perform normal daily activities is inhibited by this then it may be time to consider euthanasia. I also think this is something you should discuss with your vet - they know you and Coco best and might be able to provide further guidance.
