How to blunt my dog's short, pointy nails without risking the quick?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 5 months old | 19.842 lbs

Can i make my dog's nails blunt without cutting them? They are not long, but pointy. For some unknown reason, my dog's nails don't grow that much and stay kinda short to the point the point is always near her blood vessels. I'm afraid to cut them, since my mom already had accidentally cut my the tip of my dog's nail blood vessel...

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! You could use a nail file to try to keep them more rounded and blunt as opposed to being sharp. There are even some nail files for dogs that are automatic and quite effective. You may find these online or at your local pet store. Good luck!
