My dog has a lump. Why do dogs get cysts and what causes them?

Many times these types of cysts will resolve on their own. You can use a medicated shampoo like Dechra DermaBenSs Shampoo that will help flush the follicle. However, if it gets big enough, it can sometimes get infected and need treatment from a vet. Try to avoid squeezing these cysts as you can cause some more damage. It is possible this could be a cyst. Cysts can decrease in size, especially if the vet used a needle to aspirate fluid from the cyst. They do not, however, usually go away completely and will often fill back up. In some cases, these cysts will rupture and can cause pain or result in infection, so the best course if it seems to be causing problems is to remove it surgically.

Unfortunately there is no way to prevent cysts, they just happen sometimes in dogs. I'm also sorry to tell you there is no home remedy for them. It's very important that you don't squeeze them, as that causes pain to the dog and introduces infection into the area. They will have to be drained sterilely, and the vet may want to remove the cyst surgically to prevent it from reoccurring. Any new lump or bump that appears should be checked out by a vet, as there are a number of causes of lumps and bumps such as malignant tumors, benign tumors, and abscesses as well as cysts. It could be Sally has a sebaceous cyst, which is a plugged oil gland in the skin. These can be common. Do not try to pop it, which will introduce infection into the area. Make an appointment with her vet, who can drain it and remove the cyst sac if needed. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! It is very hard to say without seeing Safire. It sounds like it could be a cyst (a large pimple). It is common for them to fill and burst. I recommend showing it to your vet at your next visit. They will stick a needle in it and look at the cells under the microscope to determine. Good luck and kisses to Safire!

It's quite possible that the little bump on Booboo's back is a cyst. While most cysts are benign (especially ones in young dogs), their size can fluctuate as they fill with fluid, rupture, then refill. When cysts rupture, they can cause little crusts or scabs on the surface of the skin. These lesions can become infected if a dog licks or scratches at the area, but most of the time, they don't cause any problems. I don't see evidence of infection in the picture. For now, I think it's reasonable to keep an eye on the area for changes. If you want to clean it with an antiseptic to err on the side of caution, Hibiclens and betadine are both good over the counter options, but be sure to rinse well afterwards. Unless this lesion gets larger, has more discharge, or irritates Booboo, I don't think you need to take a trip to the vet for this lesion alone. If you've noticed it drain before, then it is a cyst. These usually occur when a gland is blocked and material builds up in the skin. They can go away and then come back. The only real cure for it is to have it surgically removed, but this is not usually indicated. The warm water compress may help it to rupture and drain again, but no guarantees. We usually advise benign neglect (ignoring it) and just watching it for any changes in growth or appearance. These often go away on their own after some time. I hope that helps.

It seems to be a skin cyst of some sort. It's very difficult for me to know without seeing it. Based on your description, you are likely seeing sebaceous cysts, comedones or possibly a wart. Either way, the actual cyst is not a big problem, but it could indicate another issue. Hello. This could be a pretty simple cyst, but I would not recommend doing any more squeezing as this could result in an infection settling into the tissues. Clean the area with an antiseptic, preferably with something containing 2-4% chlorhexidine ( usually available at any pharmacy ) 2-3 times a day, & plan to have your vet take a look at the area at your earliest convenience.
