I have a 10 year old Yorkie. She is fine most all day and most of the night. After she drinks water, she coughs and during the night she will get periodic coughing spells. If I take her outside to go potty, and she goes, she comes back to her kennel and is usually OK the rest of the night. When she coughs it is like she has a hair ball and after about 4 coughs she is OK.

With her age I recommend letting a veterinarian listen to her lungs. It can be heart or respiratory. If she has a murmur you may want to consider taking her to a cardiologist to have her heart evaluated. If her heart sounds fine I would talk to your veterinarian about tracheal collapse or respiratory diseases. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
