Dog kidney values increased on new food. Is this fast progression?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 18 years and 9 months old | 9.5 lbs

Last month tony had labs to check kidney values & they were beginning to elevate so over the last week my vet had me start transitioning him to kidney food. This week we did kidney values again & creatinine increased from 1.6 to 1.7, BUN from 39 to 45, SDMA stayed same at 13, phosphorus down to 4.1 from 4.2. Would u consider this a fast progression for just a months time? My vet is not too alarmed because he isn’t 100% on kidney food yet & wants to check again after a month or so on kidney diet.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would basically call that stable as long as Tony is feeling well. I would be sure that your vet has done a urinanalysis to check for protein and have checked his blood pressure. There are medications to control those things and thus prevent further kidney damage. Otherwise the plan sounds reasonable. Good luck!
