Why does my cat have a hard lump with an open sore on her belly?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 4 years and 2 months old | 15 lbs

I have a 4 yr old female cat that I found a lump on her lower stomach roughly half dollar sized and hard. Now today when I was looking at the lumb it now has a big open sore on it. I have been looking at images online, but can't seem to figure it out. Do you know what it could be?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be a benign or malignant growth. This is likely from her mammary gland. There is no way of knowing for sure without an examination though this represents a reason to seek veterinary care. This is usually determined with an examination and a fine needle aspirate (FNA) or a biopsy. Treatment depends on the findings up to that point. I recommend you have Dahlia evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good night!
