My spayed dog is licking, itching, coughing, and has a swollen vulva.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Female | spayed | 4 years and 10 months old | 48 lbs

My 5 year old pitbull got spayed last Monday and won't stop licking it. She also has kennel cough (we adopted her last Tuesday) and has been itching relentlessly, to the point that she has really bad scratches and scabs all over her. She is on doxycycline and carprofen, which were given to us by the shelter. Her vagina also looks mutated. I am insanely worried.

Her vagina will probably return to normal size in a few months, this typically happens after a dog is spayed. the redness and itching are probably allergy related, this will need to be checked and treated with allergy meds by a vet. Kennel cough in most cases does not require treatment but she is on antibiotics already so no reason to worry, it will resolve soon. regarding the licking of the spay wound, you need to put an e-collar around her neck for 2 weeks post surgery to prevent this from happening.
