My new cat is attacking my other cats. How can I stop the fighting?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed

We took Patches in from the street, and she has been with us just over 2 weeks now and at times they are all OK with one another. Still a bit nervous but OK, and then out of the blue Patches attacks one of my cats and before I know it all 3 of them are fighting. Everytime this happens I feel I am losing hope of them getting along. What can I do? We have been introducing slowly but it seems as if Patches wants to take over now.

This happens. Cats take time to get used to each other. It can take 6 months before they are either friends or tolerate each other. I have 5 cats, and two of them keep having tiffs when their paths cross, however, in general they get along by ignoring each other. Make sure your new kitty is checked for FIV and FeLV as these diseases are spread by saliva (deep bites when fighting) and also have the new cat vaccinated against rabies. Most cat fights are loud with lots of hissing, spitting and screaming but hardly any injuries....so they sound far more dramatic than they are. Give them time. Eventually peace will rule.
