How to treat cockatiel feather mites when vet advice is unclear?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Cockatiel | Male | unneutered | 0.176 lbs

My cockatiels have most probably contracted feather mites / lice.Talking to the vet didn't help much because the powder he suggested, was mostly being used for dogs and cats, almost everywhere, when I looked it up online. It was also written exclusively that it must be used for dogs. So naturally I'm a bit apprehensive about using it for my birds. In my city, there are almost no avian vets. I looked up UltraCare mite lice spray for birds online, but they don't ship it to my country.

Ask your vet to look for ivermectin dosage for birds, he needs to use the injectable form (which he has for sure as it is widely used for dogs in India), he DOES NOT need to inject it to your bird, he only needs to put the small quantity on his skin back of his neck, usually one drop is enough), he will need to repeat it 3 times, each dosage one week apart.
