My dog's breasts are swollen and engorged after birth. Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Olde English Bulldogge | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 6 months old | 50 lbs

My dog gave birth Thursday 9/27. Today her breast are extremely swollen and engorged. All are producing milk and non have any blood or puss. Mother is nursing the puppies and doesn’t seem to be lethargic and has no loss in appetite. Is it normal for the breast to be swollen and engorged? The puppies are still nursing from all nipples.

If you can easily express milk from each nipple and Remi does not have a fever (rectal temperature over 102.5), then the engorgement is perfectly normal. As the puppies get older and Remi's milk supply regulates, there should not be as much engorgement, but the mammary glands will stay enlarged while she is nursing.
