My new cat won't eat after owner passed. When should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Himalayan | Female | spayed | 16 lbs

The owner of my new cat was in the hospital for 3 months. The cat was left alone with food and water for 3 months. Her fur all matted like dreadlocks and i have made her a grooming appointment. The day her owner passed away she stopped eating. I have had her for 3 days and her owner passed away 2 days before I got her so she hasn't eaten in 5 days. I made her a comfortable safe spot in my home and tried her normal hard food, wet food, tuna, chicken, cat treats.. she won't eat anything.

I am truly sorry for the loss of your friend. It is critical for Hazelanne to be physically examined by your veterinarian. Cats who do not eat for 2+ days are at risk of developing serious liver related disease that may require hospitalization and supportive care. She may need blood tests to assess major organ function, especially liver function. Abdominal x-rays or ultrasound may also be recommended to assess her liver size and architecture. You can try warming her food or mixing in baby food to stimulate the appetite, but if the anorexia persists, then a vet visit is strongly advised.
