Quail chick has a shriveled foot & can't walk. How can I help?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I think my 1 day old king quail has a broken foot. This morning it hatched in the incubator and fell under the plastic tray. It was there for around an hour. It was a tight space and I unscrewed the platform and saved it. When it walks, it's foot is shriveled up and it rolls around a lot due to its inability to easily walk. Is there anything I can do about it?

If the foot is shriveled up it could be that the leg was deformed in the egg rather than broken, though if it was trapped a while that could have injured it as well. I would keep an eye on it and if it doesn't improve or straighten out, or seems to be causing distress, have it checked by a vet. They may need to offer a splint or other treatment plan to help it improve and get the baby feeling better.
